San Miguel’s History
Located in the eastern part of Guanajuato in Mexico’s mountainous region. San Miguel de Allende, previously known as (San Miguel el Grande serves as the administrative seat for the surrounding municipality of Allende, Guanajuato.
Founded in 1542 by Fray Juan de San Miguel, it used to be an important stop over on the Antiguo Camino Real, part of the silver route from Zacatecas.
San Miguel de Allende played a very important part in the history of Mexican Independence. It was here that General Ignacio Allende one of San Miguel’s native sons joined the army as Padre Miguel Hidalgo’s chief lieutenant in the war against Spain for independence. Unfortunately, General Allende was not able to live in an independent Mexico. He was captured during a battle and beheaded in 1811. Allende became a national hero and San Miguel el Grande renamed itself “San Miguel de Allende” in 1826 in honor of his actions.
Life in San Miguel
San Miguel is now designated as a national monument that preserves the beautiful Spanish architecture. San Miguel is also a cosmopolitan and a picturesque colonial city. The town’s charm and it’s world famous mild climate have attracted a large percentage of foreigners from many nationalities who have decided to live here.
In July of 2008 San Miguel was declared a world Heritage site by Unesco. It was choosen for its well-preserved Baroque Colonial architecture and its role in the Mexican War on Independence. The village and shine of Atotonilco, only twenty minutes from the center of San Miguel is a must see. The mural work has led the complex to be dubbed the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico.
San Miguel Allende is one of Mexico’s top 10 tourist destinations, and receives over 100,000 tourists per year. The town has become a center for cultural and intellectual events: painting, sculpture, music, and literature just to name a few.
